‘Grave Secrets’ Production Description

Casting ‘Grave Secrets’ episode 203 of a true-crime series that airs on the Investigative Discovery channel. ‘Grave Secrets’ Roles to cast for Sara (Lead): Female, 55-70 short/medium length dark/graying hair; Sara was a 68-year old grandmother at the time of her murder; she was very prim and proper; she’d had a long and successful career as a loan officer at the local bank, but it seems her real passion was keeping a spotless home and caring for her extended family and friends; she was described by how her clothes were always just so, perfectly pressed and coordinated; throughout her home, not a thing was out of place; she would host an annual Christmas celebration with family members and friends, and always made sure everyone had a formal place setting; she kept daily details of her life in her planner and checked off each day to indicate it was complete.
Sara kept a baby crib at the bottom of her bed so her grandchildren could visit often; she doted on her son, Mike, but was not thrilled with the choice of his most recent wife. It seems Sara’s relationship with her son was complicated; and was also married four times; she was married to her fourth husband, Cardwell, for 20 years; by all accounts, she was very devoted to him, even after his debilitating strokes; Cardwell also brought his own adult children into the picture; their relationship to their new stepmother was by most accounts normal and amicable, but did they harbor any malice towards her?; and could that have anything to do with this seemingly sweet grandmother’s murder? Ethnicity: Caucasian Required Media: Headshot/Photo Sheriff Johnson (Lead): Male, 58-68 mostly bald, close cropped gray/white hair; Sheriff Johnson is a sweet Southern charmer; he dresses straight out of a Brooks Brothers catalog; Johnson is a former college football player, but don’t let his large stature fool you .. he is a bit of a marshmallow — tearing up as he speaks about his victims; he is often told he looks like Terry Bradshaw. With nearly 40 years experience with the State Bureau of Investigations and the Sheriff’s department, Johnson is “The Closer” — brought in when investigators need to get a confession from their perp. A staunch Republican, Sheriff Johnson is tough on crime — you do the crime, you gotta do the time! But he prides himself on treating every bad guy as a human — recognizing that difficult life circumstances have often landed these criminals where they are today; Sheriff Johnson is tough — but always sprinkles his firm discipline with a bit of a paternal, “Now, son” touch! Ethnicity: Caucasian Required Media: Headshot/Photo Lt. Morris (Supporting): Male, 50-65 Short, cropped hair – graying/white Lt. Morris is a squeaky clean detective. Sara’s murder was his first homicide investigation EVER … and it was his dogged, unrelenting approach to investigations that landed Morris in the lead role. As Sheriff Johnson says, “I would rather have a pack of wolves coming after me than Lt. Morris.” Lt. Morris is by the book — he crosses every “t” and dots every “i.” He is buttoned-up. He admits he had the jitters when asked to lead this murder investigation. Rate: TBD Ethnicity: Caucasian Required Media: Headshot/Photo Dennis (Lead): Male, 38-48 Dark, short/medium length hair with a dark mustache In the ‘Grave Secrets’ Dennis was 42-years-old when he hired Thomas to kill his step-mom. Dennis was a ne’er-do-well… a daddy’s boy who never completely broke away from his father — financially or emotionally. Dennis lived in a trailer on the family farm — just 2 doors from his dad and Sara. He was a regular at Sara’s family gatherings. Dennis was counting on him and his brother, Alan, inheriting the 40-acre family farm someday and he panicked as his father’s medical care costs escalated and Sara wanted to sell the family farm to make payments for his care. Rate: TBD Ethnicity: Caucasian Required Media: Headshot/Photo Cardwell (Supporting): Male, 65-85 Short, dark hair. graying Cardwell had retired and he was also a decorated war hero/veteran. He was a relatively successful man — owning two rental houses, an airplane, several vehicles, farm equipment, his home with Sara and a 40-plus acre farm. Cardwell had recently lost his first wife when he met Sara, and they quickly married soon after meeting. Cardwell was 17 years Sara’s senior. While some say Cardwell was a nice man, Sara’s friends tell us he could be quite nasty to her, insulting her cooking and talking about her behind her back. Cardwell had several bank accounts that had only his name and the names of his sons on it. Cardwell also had a secret post office box where he received mail that he didn’t want Sara to see. Cardwell had suffered a series of strokes in late 2004 and had been living in a nursing facility with skilled nursing care since that time. Sara would visit her husband in the facility nearly every day. When Sara was murdered, friends say Cardwell could barely recognize his wife. Rate: TBD Ethnicity: Caucasian Required Media: Headshot/Photo Mike (Supporting): Male, 40-55 Short, brunette hair. Mustache. Mike is Sara’s only son. Mike was 46-years-old at the time of his mother’s murder. He was working for the state of North Carolina as an electronic technician, handling traffic signals and roadway lighting. Mike says he did not have a close relationship with his step-father, Cardwell, or step-brothers, Dennis and Alan. They were cordial to one another. As a family member, Mike was initially a suspect in his mother’s murder. Mike and his mother had a tumultuous relationship. Mike had been removed as Sara’s power of attorney. The tension between mother and son was known to many — it seems much of the tension surrounded Christy, the woman Mike married the month before Sara was killed. Sara did not like Christy (his first marriage ended in divorce). No one is certain of the reasons for this strain, but it seems the tension hinged on how Christy spent money and the kind of mother she was to their son. In addition, Sara’s friends tell us Mike would often come to his mother looking for money. Sara’s friends describe Mike as ungrateful. They do not think Mike treated his mother very well. Today Mike appears distraught over his mother’s death. Thomas is something of a career criminal with a long rap sheet to prove it. He considers himself a mechanic and has a long friendship with Dennis. Friday was visiting Dennis about a car when talk of Dennis’ annoying step-mother came up — before he knew it, Friday was involved in a murder for hire. Friday is quite well-spoken, fairly charming, and during his interrogation appears genuinely concerned for his four children. What he was thinking getting involved in this for $2000 one will never know!
